Rape case of minor: Supreme Court issues notice to Rajasthan on Asaram's challenge to life sentence
Rape case of minor: Supreme Court issues notice to Rajasthan on Asaram's challenge to life sentence reports that India’s Supreme Court asked the Rajasthan government for a response regarding self-styled godman Asaram’s plea. On Tuesday, a bench led by Justices MM Sundresh and Sheel Nagu issued notice and sought the state’s reply within two weeks. The court said it was not granting bail at that stage, while indicating it would consider bail only if “grave necessity” existed, such as circumstances where his life is in danger. The case stems from a minor rape conviction from 2013, where the Rajasthan High Court on May 27 upheld his conviction but acquitted him on charges related to gangrape and penetrative sexual assault under the IPC and POCSO Act. Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment on April 25, 2018 under multiple provisions including the Juvenile Justice Act. The Supreme Court will now review his challenge.
