One in six Britons think growth of Muslim population is 'threat to UK culture', study finds - AOL
One in six Britons believes the growth of the Muslim population poses a foundational threat to UK culture, according to a study by British Future and the British Muslim Trust. The report finds 17% of the public 'strongly agree' with the claim, while 19% disagree that Muslims born in Britain are as British as white non-Muslims born here. Yet 73% of Muslims say the UK is a good place to be Muslim, and 57% think Muslims and white non-Muslims can live well together in towns and cities.
Beyond attitudes, the study highlights perceived prejudice and calls for action. The public shows 63% recognition of prejudice against Muslims, and 61% support government action to counter anti-Muslim prejudice, with higher support among the most engaged 20% of respondents. It also notes 69% of Muslim women say they feel less safe after Unite the Kingdom rally, while 69% overall say British-born Muslims are as British as white non-Muslims born here. The authors warn that online misinformation and hostility spread faster than ever, and stress that improving interpersonal contact and local relationships is essential to reducing prejudice.
