Remembering a trip in Libya | Arkansas Democrat Gazette
A reflective firsthand account takes readers back to years spent working in Libya’s desert around Benghazi, where the author, then a well-site geologist for about 18 months, pursued a personal “check it out” list of locations. During a drilling delay when the crew planned to drill an additional 50 feet and change bits, he drove a Land Rover to the coast, visiting the remains of an older biplane crash near the Mediterranean Sea. He then went to Marsa el Brega to reach an Esso dining hall and later explored coastal fortifications from World War II, including a German machine gun emplacement. He crossed the desert toward a WWII British long-range desert group oasis staging area, where he encountered an aircraft landing strip and mine stacks, with local children surrounding his vehicle as the day continued.
