Sassuolo teammates pay tribute to Ismael Kone after gruesome World Cup injury

More than two months after Canada midfielder Ismael Kone suffered a severe leg injury during a World Cup group match against Qatar, his club teammates at Sassuolo are still rallying behind him. On Saturday, Aug. 29, Sassuolo attacker Cristian Volpato scored in the team’s second Serie A match and celebrated by holding up a shirt bearing Kone’s name and the number 90. Volpato’s goal came after running onto a backheel from Vasilije Adzic. Kone, a CF Montreal product who joined Sassuolo in 2025, fractured his fibula and tibia. He hopes to return before year-end.
