Spain's Ceuta, exhausted migrants end short trip with little hope

Exhausted migrants leaving Spain’s enclave of Ceuta returned to Morocco after spending two or three days inside, with few supplies and little welcome. On Saturday morning, Spanish soldiers and Civil Guard officers guided a steady flow—mostly very young men—toward the border exit. Some were barefoot and others had Red Cross blankets. “I’m leaving because there’s no food,” said 23-year-old Abdel Latif, who crossed back because he found no jobs in Morocco. The surge brought an unprecedented influx of people: estimates ranged from 50,000 to 60,000 arrivals over two or three days. Spanish authorities say at least 67 died attempting the crossing, and “almost all” entrants have now returned.
