This long-standing Edmonton club is inviting new members to sew some good deeds
xCruzo Brief
A long-running Edmonton quilting club is inviting new members to help support the local community through sewing. Known to some as the “quilting queens of St. Andrews,” the group has been meeting, measuring and mending for more than 50 years. Club president Maile Bower said it began at St. James Church with 18 ladies who sewed warm clothing for people working on the warning line in the Arctic. Today, the club gathers every Tuesday at St. Andrews United Church, working on quilts and baby blankets, with members aged from mid-50s to 101. The club’s quilt sale this year will be Oct. 17, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with proceeds going to Pilgrims Hospice and the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation. Cloth donations are accepted year-round.
