Victorian teachers are caught in a turf war. It's Pythonesque but no laughing matter
A dispute inside Victoria’s teachers’ union has turned into what the article describes as a Pyonesque “turf war,” with hard-left factions competing for influence during a pay fight. The author recalls encountering a pamphlet outside a supermarket from the Committee For Public Education, which attacked a four-year wage increase of 28% to 32% and framed it as a deal between the Australian Education Union and the Victorian Labor government. The pamphlet also broadened its messaging into opposition to the enterprise bargaining system and referenced other political issues, including claims about the war on Iran, proposed cuts to the NDIS, and rival groups such as “Socialists in Schools.” The piece notes that other factions active within the AEU include Socialists in Schools and Fight the Crisis. After an “extraordinary revolt” on Friday, 58% of AEU members voted against a proposed enterprise agreement endorsed by leadership.
