Viking’s second hydrogen fuel cell-powered cruise ship, Viking Astrea, has entered the final construction phase after a floating-out ceremony on 11 September at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard. The 239-metre, roughly 54,300-gross-ton vessel is scheduled for delivery in May 2027 and will sail its inaugural season across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Viking Astrea will begin final construction and interior outfitting at a nearby dock. With 499 staterooms, it can accommodate 998 passengers. The propulsion system uses liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, aiming for zero emissions in environmentally sensitive areas. Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM) developed the system with 6 MW power capability.
