A luxury river cruise on AmaWaterways’ 162-passenger AmaCerto became a time-sensitive operation after water levels dropped unexpectedly on Europe’s Rhine route. While on the “Rivers and Castles” itinerary leaving Nuremberg earlier than planned, Captain Daniel Langius told guests that the Rhine level had fallen, threatening the schedule and the ability to reach the Moselle. The ship approached the shallowest navigable section near Kaub, close to Koblenz, in the Middle Rhine Gorge. At Kaub, normal depth is about 208 cm, but it was around 62 cm—below a critical 78 cm threshold. With levels still falling, AmaCerto’s crew planned a “ship swap” with a sister vessel, moving luggage and arranging an improvised shore excursion.
