GIEWS Country Brief: The Arab Republic of Egypt 30-June-2026 - Egypt
GIEWS Country Briefing for Egypt dated 30 June 2026 highlights rising food-insecurity risks for refugees in 2026 amid humanitarian funding constraints. It also forecasts an above-average 2026 wheat harvest supported by expanded planted area, with harvesting starting in May and continuing until August. Wheat production is forecast at about 10 million tonnes, roughly 7% above the average, driven by government procurement prices announced ahead of the sowing season in late August 2025 at EGP 2,250–2,350 per ardeb, more than 30% above international prices. In April 2026, procurement prices increased to EGP 2,500 per ardeb to strengthen strategic stocks amid regional instability. By mid-June, Egypt had procured about 4.7 million tonnes of wheat, around 20% more than the same period in 2025. Cereal import requirements for 2026/27 are projected at 29 million tonnes, 30% above average, including wheat imports of 13.5 million tonnes and maize imports of 15.5 million tonnes. Food inflation resumed an upward trend from February 2026, reaching 7.6% in May, largely tied to currency depreciation.
