Graduation celebrates young entrepreneurs tackling unemployment in South Africa
Graduation celebrates young entrepreneurs tackling unemployment in South Africa covers Services SETA’s Youth Month conclusion, marked by the graduation of 69 participants from its New Venture Creation Learnership. The ceremony took place in partnership with the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Social Development and the Phosaane Institute. The program trained aspiring young entrepreneurs in practical skills aimed at addressing youth unemployment, including identifying business opportunities, market research, business plan development, financial management, customer service, and building sustainable enterprises. Of 98 recruits, 69 completed the learnership, a success rate described by Services SETA acting CEO Sibusiso Dhladhla as among the organization’s strongest outcomes, especially compared with national success rates that often range between 40% and 70%. The authority said more than 10% of graduates have already secured permanent employment or launched businesses such as bakeries and beauty salons. Phosaane Institute director Herbert Phogole credited partnerships, including workplace exposure and mentorship led by the City of Johannesburg and host businesses.
