Dan Kelly’s global supermarket odyssey reveals that two British staples appear in virtually every shop worldwide. Over 11 years, he visited about 1,000 supermarkets in 150 countries, starting in 2014 while researching cost-of-living data for relocating employees. Each city brought a new set of about 164 items to price, and he typically arrived every two days, often staying on a daily budget of roughly £70. His journeys gave him extensive exposure to the interiors of commercial aircraft and a firsthand view of how global supply chains shape everyday shopping. He notes that tea and coffee are almost universal, citing Twinings English Breakfast Tea (100g, red box) and Nescafé Gold (100g jars) as staples found worldwide. In the UK, Which? named ALDI the cheapest supermarket in May, at £168.30 for 95 items, based on a standardized basket across eight chains.
