The U.S. Government Just Bet $2 Billion on 9 Quantum Computing Companies. Here's What It Means for Investors. | The Motley Fool
The U.S. government unveiled a roughly $2.01 billion funding package for nine quantum-computing companies under the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, in exchange for minority equity stakes. IBM secured about $1 billion to launch Anderon, a new Albany, New York chip foundry, with IBM matching the investment to push the project toward a near $2 billion total. An additional $375 million was earmarked for GlobalFoundries. The move signals Washington’s willingness to back quantum development, even as IBM’s core results remain strong with $67.5 billion in 2025 revenue and $14.7 billion in free cash flow. Smaller quantum players—D-Wave, Rigetti, and Infleqtion—could receive up to $100 million each, sending their shares higher in a single session and driving overall market value toward roughly $5 billion, far exceeding the proposed awards of about $300 million.
