Economists say U.S. growth has held up despite a cooling labor market, trade tensions and renewed inflation, but multiple threats are converging to raise the odds of trouble. Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research warned in a Sept. 14 report that the “worry list is growing more worrisome,” pointing to a widening energy shock. The Iran conflict shows no clear signs of ending, and renewed attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea have pushed oil to a four-month high. AAA data shows Monday diesel prices hit a record $6.23 a gallon. Yardeni also cited higher global bond yields, sticky inflation and a likely Fed rate hike of 0.25 percentage points on Wednesday.
