Uruguay Economy 2026, Who Runs It and How
Uruguay’s economy in 2026 is shaped less by a single dominant company and more by a system where the state holds major levers while multinationals concentrate in specific sectors. The country of 3.4 million people is driven by agriculture, forestry, logistics, and financial services. Power is coordinated in Montevideo by President Yamandú Ramón Orsi Martínez, in office since March 1, 2025, while fiscal policy is run by Economy and Finance Minister Gabriel Oddone París. Monetary policy belongs to the Banco Central del Uruguay, led by Guillermo Tolosa since March 24, 2025. Sector policies involve ministries such as Industry, Energy and Mining under Fernanda Cardona, and Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries. The state also controls key infrastructure through entities like UTE for electricity.
