Amid Budget Woes, Board Members Consider Pushing Ragin' Cajuns Out of the FBS

Amid budget concerns, a member of the University of Louisiana Board of Regents suggested pushing Louisiana’s “Ragin’ Cajuns” out of the FBS and into the FCS. Regent Wilbert Pryor, a Shreveport attorney, made the case during the board’s Sept. 22 budget hearing for University of Louisiana System schools, also naming Louisiana Tech and ULM as candidates. Pryor argued that continuing to compete at the same level as LSU is unsustainable, citing deficits he said total $20 million for UL, $17 million for Louisiana Tech, and $10 million for ULM. He also pointed to coaching pay gaps and called the current approach a “sinking hole.” System president Rick Gallot said Deloitte is evaluating sustainability and a report is due by year-end before any formal decision, with choices expected as 2027 begins.
