Black Sunflowers' Team On Sean Penn's Support For Doc About Ukraine
Black Sunflowers, a Ukraine-war themed documentary, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and is built around the lived reality of young Ukrainians affected by Russia’s full-scale invasion. The poster depicts a dancer missing part of his right leg below the knee, underscoring how war has maimed some, shattered others’ plans, and yet left many determined to keep living. Director James Marcus Haney said many existing Ukraine films focused heavily on grim violence, while he wanted a clearer picture of “the light” in the country. Twin artists Anna and Tetyana Diianchuk appear in the film, along with soldiers and injured veterans who join dance parties. Sean Penn, who executive produces, previously backed Ukraine through his own documentary, Superpower (2023).
