Ex-NFL Scout: Giants' First-Round Picks Are Built for Versatility

The New York Giants reshaped parts of their roster in the 2026 draft, targeting versatility with two first-round selections and trades to adjust their board. They chose Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese with the fifth overall pick, then moved up five spots to take Miami offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa at the tenth overall selection by acquiring the pick from the Bengals in exchange for defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence. Former NFL scout John Middlekauff said Reese’s value stems from a hybrid usage that could expand beyond the Giants’ stated intention to play him mainly off-ball as a rookie. Middlekauff highlighted Reese’s 2025 snap distribution—327 on the defensive line and 286 off the ball—where he shifted between linebacker duties and front alignment. He also suggested Mauigoa could eventually return to right tackle, despite starting his NFL career at right guard. The Giants re-signed Jermaine Eluemunor to a new three-year deal to remain at right tackle.
