Fishing World Australia reports that Victorian fishers have been advised to remain alert after detection of the H5 strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (“bird flu”) in migratory seabirds in Western Australia and South Australia. The notice says it is the first time this strain has been identified in Australia. Authorities warn that the virus spreads easily among birds and can affect wildlife, including species seen offshore in tuna fishing areas. While there have been no detections in Victoria, vigilance is emphasized, particularly for people working offshore where seabirds and marine mammals are present. The guidance highlights indicators such as unusual seabird behavior, multiple dead seabirds, and sick or dead marine mammals around fishing grounds. It also instructs fishers not to handle or bring affected wildlife onboard and to report clusters of five or more sick or dead wild birds anywhere in Victoria.
