Former NBA player J.R. Smith arrested in North Texas for family violence

Former NBA player J.R. Smith III was arrested Monday afternoon in North Texas after a traffic stop, the Royse City Police Department said. Authorities reported that an in-car license plate reader flagged his eastbound vehicle on Interstate 30 around 2:45 p.m., and Smith had an active warrant from the Southlake Police Department for a family-violence assault causing bodily injury. He was taken into custody and booked at the Hunt County Detention Center. Police said the details that led to the Southlake warrant have not been publicly released. Smith played 16 NBA seasons from 2004 to 2020, winning titles with the Cavaliers in 2016 and the Lakers in 2020.
