In a personal essay, Luke McLaughlin reflects on what it means to “switch allegiance” as a football fan, arguing that loyalties can evolve as people and circumstances change. He traces his own path: after attending West Ham vs. Nottingham Forest at Upton Park in November 1987—where the hosts won 3-2—he became a Forest supporter despite childhood photos in Everton and Tottenham kits. He later leaned into Tottenham and then returned to following Forest more regularly in London. Violence after a playoff-hopes-ending Millwall result shaped his experiences at the Den in the 1993-94 season, and when Forest declined mid-90s he became more of a “fairweather” fan. In recent years, he has also followed Yeovil while living in Somerset and later has watched Millwall again.
