Marcos Llorente has confirmed he is permanently retiring from Spain’s international setup at 31, a decision that follows his role in winning the 2026 World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Atlético Madrid defender-midfielder said on social media that timing may look surprising, but the choice was “personal” and made independently of the tournament outcome. Llorente ends his international career with 27 caps, having featured at two World Cups and one European Championship. He debuted for the senior team against the Netherlands in 2020. Earlier, he was left out of the most recent European Championship squad as Luis de la Fuente chose Jesus Navas and Dani Carvajal.
