Jackie the bald eagle in 'critical' condition as bird continues to suffer from 'severe' anemia; Shadow cries out from nest
Jackie the bald eagle remains in critical condition as the Ojai Raptor Center reported Tuesday that she is suffering from severe anemia and kidney inflammation. The center said wildlife experts found no serious physical injuries after Jackie was attacked by a pair of bald eagles on the north shore of Big Bear Lake last week, but her illness still has an undetermined cause. The organization said she is alert and eating, yet stressed that it is still too early to predict the outcome. Tests are ongoing to determine whether rodenticide or heavy metal poisoning played a role, with additional bloodwork checking for elevated lead or zinc levels. X-rays showed no signs of fishing hooks, sinkers, or other metal objects. Jackie is one half of the Big Bear pair Jackie and Shadow, featured on live cameras run by Friends of Big Bear Valley, and she is currently raising a second pair of eaglets. Shadow is raising the fledglings while Jackie stays away from the nest.
