Joanne packed a bag to hitchhike to Sydney. She was never seen again
Joanne Butterfield’s disappearance after preparing to hitchhike to Sydney is being investigated in an inquest focused on suspected death and police handling. In June 1998, locals in far north Queensland found a floral bag and broken glass near a cane train track by a remote lookout; the bag matched one Butterfield, a 37-year-old mother of four, carried everywhere. It contained her birth certificate, passport, a typed resume, and toiletries. She was last seen alive at about 8pm on June 25, 1998, leaving a house in Mowbray near the Captain Cook Highway wearing a black dress and carrying the bag. Counsel Peter Ah Gee told the Coroners Court the police response involved limited action, including few photos and uncertainty in 2024 about what was found. The inquest before Coroner Stephanie Williams will examine why Butterfield vanished and whether investigation steps were adequate.
