Mastermyne fined over Moranbah North death - Industry Queensland
Mastermyne was fined $310,000 and ordered to pay $54,000 in costs following an incident at the Moranbah North mine that fatally injured employee Gavin Feltwell in March 2022. The company was sentenced in Queensland’s Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to a summary charge of failing to meet obligations under the Coal Mine Safety and Health Act. Feltwell, 59, died while workers were dismantling conveyor equipment underground at the Moranbah North coal mine. Mastermyne said safety and wellbeing remain its core value and that it has invested in enhancing its safety culture and systems. Union leaders criticised the penalty, with Mining and Energy Union Queensland officials saying it would not persuade miners that safety is prioritised over profits. The article also notes Mastermyne was previously fined $7 million and ordered to pay $300,000 in regulator costs for a separate industrial manslaughter conviction related to a fatality at the Crinum mine project in September 2021.
