New York Liberty leads WNBA with 7 players headed to Germany for FIBA World Cup

As the WNBA takes a break for the FIBA Women’s World Cup, the New York Liberty stand out with the largest group of players headed to Germany. Seven Liberty players are set to participate in the tournament beginning Sept. 4 in Berlin, reflecting a wide mix of countries: France, Nigeria, China, Germany, Australia, Spain, the Bahamas and the U.S. A potential eighth spot is unavailable because Satou Sabally is still recovering from a concussion and can’t represent Germany. Breanna Stewart compared the roster to “the United Nations,” while Rebecca Allen said the experience was different when she joined in 2015. Pauline Astier, playing for France, noted how welcoming teammates have made the transition easier. Han Xu, Elizabeth Balogun, Leonie Fiebich and Raquel Carrera also will represent their nations.
