The Ilfracombe Town Council has written to the Devon and Cornwall police crime commissioner seeking help amid rising concerns about crime and antisocial behaviour. They describe assaults on shop workers, regular shoplifting, vandalism and teenage intimidation, along with drug dealing and homelessness in areas frequented by tourists.

Speaking with locals revealed a layered picture. Mel Turnball, who runs hand:plant on the High Street, has lived here for 20 years and runs a coffee shop that features local art. She stresses community and says many incidents stem from a small minority, while the town still retains its seaside character and a desire to thrive year-round.
