The ex-sandwich maker who cycles to Champions League games

Jacob Bergstrom has gone from working at Subway while playing amateur football to scoring on his Champions League debut as a striker for Mjällby. The 31-year-old, who was never taken into a youth academy and only became a full-time professional at 24, helped Mjällby win the Swedish championship and Swedish Cup for the first time in the club’s 87-year history. Now they face Slovan Bratislava, coached by former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Touré, a Champions League winner. Bergstrom lives in Hallevik, a coastal Swedish village of fewer than 1,000 residents, and cycles to training at Strandvallen near the Baltic Sea.
