Vanderbilt 'cheated the football gods' in all-time bad beat for NC State bettors

NC State bettors faced an extraordinary late-game swing in a loss to Vanderbilt that ESPN Analytics estimated gave the Wolfpack a 94.4% chance to cover after leading 31-28 with the ball on their own 5-yard line and six seconds remaining. NC State needed to run out fourth down, or even could have achieved a safety while still winning. Instead, Vanderbilt DL Miles Capers forced a fumble and defensive back Cayden Daniels recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown, giving Vandy a 34-31 lead. A review added one second, allowing Vanderbilt to kick the extra point and move the spread, then NC State’s final play included laterals that ended with a fumble. Clark Lea said Vanderbilt “cheated the football gods” to get away with it.
