Wicketkeeping is back as a skill that really matters

In England’s Test summer of 2026, wicketkeeping is once again central to bowling plans, with keepers regularly standing up to the stumps against seamers. Fast-bowling pace has been noticeably modest in this approach: Matt Henry, Nathan Smith, Mohammad Abbas and Ollie Robinson have taken 61 wickets at 16.4 apiece, while rarely exceeding 82 mph. For Robinson in particular, the tactic initially irritated him when Jamie Smith came up at Lord’s against New Zealand in June. After returning his keeper-standing role to full focus, Robinson won player of the match in all three Tests since recall, crediting the change for adding a new dimension by trapping batters on the crease.
