WNBA star says she received death threats over Caitlin Clark incident
A WNBA star says she received death threats over Caitlin Clark incident after a controversial moment in a recent game involving Alyssa Thomas of the Phoenix Mercury. Thomas said she received death threats and racial slurs following an incident in which she put her hand on Caitlin Clark’s throat during Wednesday’s matchup between the Mercury and the Fever. Thomas told reporters she believes the league and commissioner Cathy Engelbert did not do enough to protect players. No foul was called on the play, and the WNBA later handed Thomas a one-game suspension on Thursday. Thomas described the action as a “complete accident” and criticized what she said included threats, leaked addresses, and social-media harassment, while also referencing Engelbert’s silence despite the concerns. Engelbert responded with a statement condemning hate and saying the league’s security team was in contact with the Mercury.
