Ahead of SpaceX IPO, Musk says AI satellites will use mostly existing technology

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk argued that orbital AI data centers are not a difficult engineering challenge, leveraging technology already deployed in Starlink to support an upcoming IPO valued around $1.75 trillion. Musk and SpaceX engineer Ian Dahl outlined AI satellites that would function as computing nodes in orbit, powered by solar energy and cooled radiatively into space. Initial satellites are expected to deliver about 150 kilowatts of peak power and 120 kilowatts of sustained compute power, comparable to a single Nvidia GB300 AI server rack. The plan relies on Starlink V3 tech, excluding large phased-array antennas, with Starship’s fully reusable design enabling scalable launches of solar panels and chips. Bastrop, Texas, is slated to host a new AI satellite factory, targeting meaningful production by the end of next year.
