California college students enrolled in public institutions can now apply for CalFresh, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday. The change expands eligibility to students in degree programs at California Community Colleges, California State University, and the University of California, with potential benefits of up to $300 per month for food purchases at grocery stores and farmers markets. Newsom said the state wants students not to have to go hungry to learn, arguing the policy removes “hoops” for accessing benefits they are entitled to. California Department of Social Services Director Jennifer Troia said the state expects more than 200,000 additional students to enroll after the expansion.
