Anthropic proposes law regulating AI to US lawmakers
xCruzo Brief
Anthropic, the creator of the AI assistant Claude, confirmed on Oct 16 that it is circulating a draft bill among US lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence in the absence of federal rules on risks. The proposal, first reported by Politico, would allow Washington to block a model’s release or use if there is an imminent risk of killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people, or causing over US$1 billion in damages, but only with a judge’s approval. A company spokesperson said it would require “frontier” developers to test the most powerful models, publish findings, submit to independent evaluation and maintain robust security. Congress still has no federal AI law and is out of session until after next month’s midterm elections.
