Anthropic suspends new AI models after government directive

Anthropic paused access to its flagship AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after a U.S. government export-control directive aimed at national security. The directive blocks any foreign national from accessing the models, inside or outside the United States, including Anthropic employees. As a result, Fable 5 is temporarily unavailable and Mythos 5 has been disabled. The directive’s letter was issued by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, with help from the Commerce Department's BIS. Anthropic indicated that officials identified a technique that could enable a narrow jailbreak, but the company questions why this should trigger a recall of a model deployed to millions. It noted the issue could affect other firms.
