Are Freezers Being Hacked? Europe and the U.S. Military Are Investigating.
Officials are investigating whether refrigeration disruptions are linked to cyberattacks, after grocery-store freezer malfunctions spread across Europe and similar issues emerged at U.S. military facilities. Shops in multiple European countries reported refrigeration problems on Monday, following a prior incident in France last month where freezers malfunctioned at hundreds of stores, which officials described as a cyberattack. In the U.S., the Army said cyber investigators are looking into events that included Aug. 26 problems at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, where freezers entered defrost mode and spoiled food, and “refrigeration system issues” at the commissary at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island. The Pentagon acknowledged “speculation” about a potential cyber incident, with the inspector general’s office investigating.
