Australia bars fully AI-made tracks from official charts after AI Madonna remix makes top 20
xCruzo Brief
Australia is tightening eligibility for its official music charts as generative AI becomes more common. The issue escalated after an Australian producer’s AI-modified version of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” entered the country’s top 20, peaking at No. 2 in May and spending 16 weeks there. In response, ARIA (the Australian Record Industry Association) says tracks created entirely by artificial intelligence won’t qualify for charts or awards. To be eligible, songs must remain human-led—written by people and featuring people on lead vocals and principal instruments, among other requirements. ARIA also requires that any AI used be properly licensed.
