Australian Gig Delivery Drivers Get $22 Minimum Hourly Pay

Delivery drivers working for on-demand apps such as UberEats in Australia will be paid at least AUS$31.30 ($22.05) per hour after an order approved by the Fair Work Commission (FWC). The new minimum standards order, issued on August 11, applies to operators engaging gig workers for delivery of food, drinks, or groceries, and is expected to take effect on August 17. The agreement, sought by the Australian Transport Workers’ Union alongside UberEats and DoorDash in 2024, does not grant employee status. Instead, workers are described as “employee-like,” while platforms must arrange and pay for personal accident insurance with a minimum level of cover.
