Bayer's Monsanto unit urges Missouri judge to approve $7.25 billion Roundup settlement

Bayer’s Monsanto unit urged a Missouri judge on Monday to approve its proposed $7.25 billion Roundup settlement covering lawsuits alleging the weedkiller causes cancer. Bayer said there is no alternative way to resolve the litigation that has weighed on the company for years. The company is attempting to settle nearly all existing and future Roundup cancer claims in the U.S. through a new class action filed in Missouri in February. Judge Timothy Boyer heard arguments in St. Louis from both supporters and opponents. Supporters said many plaintiffs reconsidered after a June U.S. Supreme Court ruling narrowed certain label-warning claims. Opponents argued the payouts—from $10,000 to $165,000—are too low and not enough to address future claims.
