Braintree rough sleepers could be fined £100 under new rules
Essex's Braintree District Council has expanded its public spaces protection order to address anti-social behaviour in Braintree town centre and Weavers Park, allowing on-the-spot fines of £100 for breaches. New restrictions cover unauthorised tent encampments and alcohol consumption that causes harassment, alarm, or nuisance, with signage updated to reflect the rules. Enforcement can include fixed penalty notices or prosecution for non-compliance, according to the council, which said the changes came into effect on Monday. Councillor Charley Dervish said the measures empower authorities to tackle street drinking and encampments, while housing options teams and CHESS, the local homelessness charity, offer referrals to support services.
Housing options teams and CHESS work with individuals to refer them to support services and help locate suitable accommodation, underscoring that enforcement accompanies outreach. Council officials say the PSPO update reflects a broader strategy to curb anti-social behaviour while connecting rough sleepers with housing and support, and they anticipate ongoing reviews and potential adjustments as the program unfolds. Together with new signage and a visible enforcement presence, the district aims to safeguard public spaces while improving access to help for those in need. Residents are asked to report concerns so authorities can tailor interventions.
