Cassava Technologies Joins Global Coalition to Power AI for 3.4 Billion Speakers of Low-Resource Languages - TechnoMag

Cassava Technologies has joined a new five-year coalition backed by the Gates Foundation aimed at improving AI for the world’s low-resource language communities. The pan-African tech group, founded by Zimbabwean entrepreneur Strive Masiyiwa, is among an initial group of 60 partners announced this week. The initiative brings together companies and institutions including Nvidia, Google, Microsoft, the OpenAI Foundation, Amazon, the World Bank Group and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. It focuses on building missing “foundational building blocks” such as responsibly collected language data, open datasets and benchmarks to measure model understanding for underrepresented languages. Cassava said the plan aligns with its Cassava AI push, including GPU-as-a-Service and an AI factory in partnership with Nvidia. The coalition argues only a small fraction of the world’s roughly 7,000 languages has enough digital data to train accurate models.
