Consumer Anxiety Grows as US Retailers Roll Out AI Pricing Tools
Consumer anxiety is rising as U.S. retailers roll out AI-based pricing tools that go beyond simply raising or lowering costs based on supply and demand. The shift from paper shelf labels to digital tags, combined with algorithms that forecast how shoppers may respond, has fueled debates online under terms like “dynamic pricing” and “surveillance pricing.” Katie Thomas of Kearney, who leads an internal consumer behavior think tank, said the tension is about who holds power over these algorithms: companies or shoppers. Walmart CEO John Furner said in a blog post that digital labels don’t raise prices based on weather, time of day, or individual shoppers. Still, consumers cite limited transparency on data collection; social media posts have falsely alleged face- or cellphone-based scanning. At least 30 states are considering pricing bills, while the FTC has proposed an enforcement policy tied to disclosure when personal data is used for individualized pricing.
