DeWine calls death of Springfield Haitian student 'horrible tragedy'

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called the death of Haitian college student Pierre Damas Bel a “horrible, horrible tragedy.” Bel, 20, was killed in an apparent suicide after being struck by a semi-truck on Interstate 70 east of Springfield at about 8:45 a.m. on Aug. 31, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol release. Bel left a 2006 Toyota Avalon on the roadside before entering the westbound lanes. The Springfield News Sun reported he died by suicide after classmates at Wright State University teased him about his ankle monitor. Bel’s father said Bel called him at 8:03 a.m. Aug. 31 saying he wasn’t feeling OK mentally because of bullying. DeWine criticized the rescission of Haitians’ TPS in Springfield, calling it a mistake economically and practically.
