Founder and decadelong Microsoft engineer. Here's who I'd hire to lead the AI transition.

In an interview with Rob Collie, a former Microsoft engineering leader, he argues that most companies are approaching AI in the wrong way. Collie’s book on organizational AI strategy, “Fair Game,” is set to be published August 11. After 13 years at Microsoft—where he helped found Power BI—he says the key opportunity isn’t buying more AI software or rushing to build large language models. Instead, businesses should teach today’s AI models how the company works and empower the right internal people to do it. He contends “off-the-shelf” tools aren’t enough, and that using commercial LLMs like “Lego bricks” with company data, workflows, and software can deliver value without training new models from scratch.
