Four Young Mathematicians Receive Prestigious Fields Medals highlights the latest cohort of the Fields Medal, awarded every four years to researchers under 40. The four recipients were announced on Thursday at the International Congress of Mathematics in Philadelphia. Their work spans areas including algebraic geometry and partial differential equations, including one solution described as resembling a geometric “puzzle” and another deriving a fundamental equation for gas motion. Yu Deng, 37, from the University of Chicago, and Hong Wang, 35, from New York University and an institute in France, were among the laureates. Wang is only the third woman to receive a Fields Medal. Jacob Tsimerman, 38, from the University of Toronto, and John Pardon, 37, from Stony Brook University on Long Island, complete the group. The prize includes 15,000 Canadian dollars and an Archimedes gold coin. The congress also addresses AI’s growing influence on mathematics and proof-checking tools.
