Origin Energy Breach Spurs Cybersecurity Worries says Australia’s Origin Energy is investigating a potential security breach that may have exposed customer data. An RMIT expert, Associate Professor Nalin Arachchilage, said the incident could create longer-term scam risks and underscores the need for quantum-safe encryption. Origin Energy reportedly stated that financial details were not taken, but Arachchilage warned that names, addresses, account numbers, and usage data are exactly the types of information attackers use to craft convincing scams and build long-term household profiles. He emphasized that the threat is not only what can be done with data now, but what could be done later using a “harvest now, decrypt later” approach. The researcher likened it to recording calls that can’t yet be understood, with attackers betting they can decode later. He also noted that moving to post-quantum cryptography can take years, while stolen data could remain in an attacker’s archive. The comments were provided through an RMIT university release.
