Government says it got hacked -- again
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is investigating another cyber breach affecting HSIN, the Homeland Security Information Network used by federal, state and local governments and law enforcement to share intelligence and coordinate emergency responses. Reporting from Nextgov and Bleeping Computer says hackers accessed HSIN servers in late May and early June, potentially exposing information shared through the platform. A DHS spokesperson told Bleeping Computer the agency is aware of a recent cyber incident involving a specific legacy, unclassified information-sharing environment, and it remains unclear what data was taken or how much. The article links the new incident to a 2023 security lapse that exposed personal information used in law-enforcement surveillance. Senator Mark Warner warned that despite being unclassified, HSIN information is highly sensitive and its exposure risks national security. Warner added that HSIN supports World Cup operations in the U.S. and previously aided the response to a 2024 mid-air collision in Washington, D.C. resulting in 67 deaths.
