Potato chip recall elevated to FDA's highest risk level
A recall of certain Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips has been elevated by the FDA to its highest risk level, Class I, due to potential salmonella contamination. Utz Quality Foods initially issued a voluntary recall in May affecting limited varieties of products including Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch potato chips in 1.5-ounce, 2.5-ounce and 8-ounce sizes, and Zapp’s Salt and Vinegar in a 1.5-ounce (60 count) format. The expanded list also includes Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar, Dirty Brand Maui Onion, Zapp’s Big Cheezy in 2-ounce and 8-ounce sizes, and Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion in 2-ounce offerings, among others detailed by the FDA. The agency classified it as a Class I recall, meaning there is a reasonable probability that using or exposure to the product could cause serious health consequences or death. Utz said batches tested negative before use and no illnesses have been reported. Consumers are advised to discard the chips and seek refunds through Utz’s recall support line.
