Hackers target Ireland due to high number of data centres
xCruzo Brief
Ireland has been “in the crosshairs” of cybercriminals, a cybersecurity expert warned, linking the risk to the country’s heavy reliance on large data centres. Brian Honan, CEO of BH Consulting, made the comments after a power outage affected Revolut. He said the disruption was caused by a Google data centre power outage in the UK, which triggered a “cascading effect” that knocked out systems used by banks and financial institutions. Honan said such cloud outages are rare but can create major knock-on damage for consumers and critical infrastructure. He also pointed to EU rules, including NIS2 and DORA, tightening incident reporting and supply-chain cybersecurity requirements.
