House Speaker Mike Johnson says Trump's $5,000 'dividend' needs congressional approval
House Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday that President Donald Trump’s proposed $5,000 “dividend” for every American adult would still require congressional approval. Trump floated the idea at the GOP’s midterm convention in Dallas last week, promising a “Trump Dividend” if Republicans keep control of the House and Senate in November. On CBS News Texas, Trump suggested Congress might not need to authorize the payments, without explaining how it could fit into spending already totaling more than $1 trillion. Johnson, R-La., said “he’d need Congress to act,” and pledged to seek consensus despite a narrow GOP margin. The plan could cost over $1 trillion, heightening deficit and inflation concerns amid persistent inflation and rising interest rates.
